welcome to the callenharty.com ireland trip day one page
We left Wisconsin early in the day on May 17 and took a flight from Chicago O'Hare, which landed at Dublin Airport early the morning of May 18. We got to our hotel just off of O'Connell Street, fell down for a nap, and woke up late afternoon, when we went out to explore Dublin a bit.
Starling This was at the airport. Ireland doesn't have a lot of wildlife, but it does play host to many birds.
The Wishing Hand At the Irish Department of Education and Science, this sculpture was created in 2001 by artist, Linda Brunker.
Man with Cell Phone We saw many Irish men leaning in doorways. This was the first of many.
Campaigns A national election was being held while we were there. I found this juxtaposition of an ad campaign poster and political campaign poster to be interesting.
Maguire Masterbrewers A set of old buildings in the heart of Dublin.
O'Connell Bridge At the end of O'Connell Street, over the River Liffey, which divides Dublin into north and south.
A Girl Waiting A girl leaning against a building while waiting for a bus or ride.
Parking Enforcement Garda (the Irish word for police) leaving a parking ticket.
Funky Wall A colorfully painted wall in the Temple Bar district.
Fresh/No Worries A clothing store on Cope Street.
Barbs Attached to the top of an apartment building this appears to be a sculpture.
Red and Black, Temple Lane South A black building with unfinished red trim.
Temple Bar A traditional Irish pub, this is one of the big tourist spots in Dublin.
Man on Essex Street Like America there are a lot of people on cell phones in Ireland. The colors of the buildings caught my eye on this one.
Women with Umbrellas in the Sun The weather does change drastically very fast in Ireland. The sun was out but a hard rain was starting to come down. It lasted about five minutes and then let up.
Wall and Window, Dublin Dublin is famous for its brightly painted doors, but many of the walls were colorful, too.
Welcome A scary-looking greeting above an entrance to an apartment.
Door with Knobs This is the door of the apartment in the previous two photos.
Alley, Dublin There are many small alleyways between streets in the capital city.
Woman with Magazine One of the surprises of Dublin was the number of beggars. This woman was selling Ireland's Issues magazine, which bills itself as a magazine "for a hand up, not a handout."
Bachelors Way It seems that together all the signs tell a story.
Pink Corner More painted buildings, these with a little bit of peeling.
Hibernia A symbolic representation of Ireland. Notice the harp, which is the national symbol. This stands atop the General Post Office, itself a symbol of the struggle for Irish independence after it was seized by the Irish volunteers during the Easter uprising.
The Happy Ring House A gaudy neon sign on O'Connell Street.
Closing Shop A shopkeeper closing up shop on O'Connell Street.
Narc Graffiti next to a bar.
Umbrella on a Fence An umbrella left behind, no doubt after the weather shifted again.
Cyprian Brady Dirty politics on a campaign poster for Fianna Fail candidate, Cyprian Brady.
Mary Mediatrix A religious store on O'Connell Street.
Women Smoking It is now illegal to smoke in bars in Dublin, so there are often congregations of smokers just outside of them.
