welcome to the callenharty.com yellowstone trip day five page
6/19/02, 5:15 p.m., Cody, Wyoming
Today has been Cody day. We decided to set aside the day just to explore the city we’re staying in for four nights. We started out this morning by going to the Buffalo Bill Dam and Reservoir, the largest dam in the world when it was originally built.

It’s very impressive, though after seeing Hoover Dam a few years back it was less impressive than it might have been.

As we were leaving there my camera broke. It seems as though some kind of spring broke on the dial to move the telephoto in and out, so if you touch it, it goes all the way to wide-angle or telephoto, but won’t stop anywhere in-between. Also, if you do go all the way to either end you can’t press the shutter release button. Fortunately, you can sort of tweak it by starting it in one direction and then flipping the switch the other way to stop it. It takes a little more patience, but at least it can be used. I was thinking of taking it to a camera repair shop here, but as long as it works I’d rather wait until we get home, as I have an extended warranty on it. I did take over 100 photos already today.

We are on a short break after doing the dam, taking some photos around town, and then stopping at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, a complex of five museums—one of art, one of Western history, one on Buffalo Bill Cody, a natural science museum, and a gun museum. We didn’t bother with the gun museum, but went through the rest of them.

After a bit we are going to the evening shootout at the Irma Hotel, Buffalo Bill’s original hotel where they do a gunfight every night at 6:00 p.m., followed by dinner, and then the rodeo.

There certainly has not been the wonderful nature today, but it has been relaxing, which I think we needed before continuing on tomorrow.
