We are on our last overnight stay on our trip tonight, with one more day of driving ahead of us. We stopped at Wall Drug store for several hours,
West
then at the Badlands Petrified Gardens.
Skull South Dakota
Both are tourist trap types of places. We knew that about Wall Drug, but wanted to stop for the trashiness of it. The Gardens was an unexpected stop after I saw it in one of the guidebooks. I knew Brian was interested in rocks and petrified forests and we had meant to stop at one yesterday, but ran out of time, so I suggested we stop at this one.
It was actually very interesting. It amazes me how things become petrified like that. The site also had a number of fossils, bones, and other rocks. The only problem was that most of it was outside with no shade and it was either near or over 100 degrees, so I didn’t feel like staying too long.
Our final stop was at the Corn Palace in Mitchell, South Dakota. This one was also for the trash factor. Unfortunately, it wasn’t trashy enough, nor good enough. It was just sort of a so-so kind of place.

Most of the time there was spent shopping, looking at all sorts of corn-related products. Actually, much of the day today was spent shopping, which tends to wear me out. For the first time on the trip, I fell asleep a number of times in the car, so I’m glad to be off the road for now.
Tomorrow we are going across Minnesota, stopping at Austin for the Spam Museum. Other than that, we may not be stopping at all until we get back to Monona
