Mourning Cloak on a Branch
Always one of the earliest butterflies to be seen in Wisconsin in the spring, this one was found in September.

A Pair of Pearl Crescents
I stopped at Blue Mounds State Park in Wisconsin on my way home from my uncle's September funeral and saw these two joined butterflies. It had special symbolic meaning that day as butterflies are said to represent rebirth.

Skippers are a type of butterfly that are generally very small. They tend to be mistaken for moths.

The adults of this are rarely seen, but these tent moth caterpillars can be seen all over in the early part of summer.

Tortricid Moth
A rather common-looking moth in the tortricid family.

An unusual vantage point of a red admiral.

Clouded Sulphur on Purple Aster
A striking contrast with the yellow clouded sulphur against the purple flower head.

Hackberry Emperor
A very friendly butterfly that was willing to pose for some photos.

Viceroy
Close-up of a viceroy. The main distinguishing feature between it and a monarch is the one horizontal black stripe across the wing.

Giant Swallowtail, Indian Lake
One of the larger North American butterflies, and very pretty to boot.

Summer Azure
Pretty little butterfly found at Lake Farm County Park, Dane County, Wisconsin.
